Carter James Michela is Here

Yes, we've gone and done it. By "it" I mean we had a kid. Although, "it" could also apply to starting a blog. I don't know whether this (starting the blog) is a good thing or not. In any event, we are now both parents (first, of course) and bloggers (somewhere well below first, i.e., whenever we get around to it). So, we'll try and get the link out to those we think might want it. Then those who want can follow the blog and those who don't won't have to be bothered with incessant e-mails or oral stories. That's enough of an intro to our new blog.

Now for the important stuff: our new baby: Carter James Michela, born October 1, 2009, at 10:04 a.m., weighing 6 pounds and 12 ounces, and measuring 19 inches long.

Carter had quite the journey getting here. Alicia's blood pressure started creeping up on September 29th. She saw her OB on the 30th, and, since Carter was due on the October 1st, Alicia's OB didn't see any benefit to letting Carter hang out any longer before being born. That is, Alicia's OB scheduled her for induction of labor on October 1st. We thought that meant one last night of sleep before our little guy arrived. Carter, however, had other ideas. The evening of the 30th, Alicia went into labor (uninduced). We went to the hospital about 2:30 a.m. on the 1st, and Carter would have arrived about 9:30 a.m. on the 1st had he not been what the OB called "sunnyside up." This necessitated a caesarian and Carter was pulled into the outside world at 10:04 a.m. on the 1st.

All the nurses and staff at the hospital (Renown) were great, which is good because Alicia and Carter had to stay there until the 4th. We also had a great big room with a view. The nurses said that this room, and the other two like it, were held for Renown employees (which Alicia is) and doctor's wives (probably doctors, too). However, it was still a hospital room, and we were happy to go home on the 4th.

Since then we have been relaxing at home. Well, trying anyway. Carter likes to let us know his lungs work quite well. Especially at night, when we wish he would sleep between feedings. He is getting better, though. I'm glad I took a month off of work. Maybe by the end of the month I'll be getting halfway regular sleep (yes, I know, don't count on it, but one can hope).

Alicia's mom (Leah) has been a great help. She arrived the afternoon of the 30th (what great mother's instinct) right before Alicia went into labor. Since then she has taken great care of us through meals, taking Carter when he won't sleep, going shopping, watching Carter so we can go out for short times, and generally keeping us sane.

Alicia's dad (Jim) came out for a few days. It was fun having him, and we wish he could have stayed longer. I think he does, too.

Anyway, I guess I'll end this first post. I'll try to keep subsequent posts shorter and, maybe, keep a lot of posts to just pictures. If anyone wants to stop by and see Carter, just let us know -- we would be happy to see you.

-John (and family)
